George Kittle comes back full circle in 49ers' romp over the Dolphins

(Santiago Mejia/S.F. Chronicle) Stepping on a football field eight months to the day after suffering a torn right Achilles was a big, big deal for George Kittle. He commemorated it with an Instagram post and spoke Friday how much it meant to be back out there with his San Francisco 49ers teammates.

>But if you gave the 32-year-old tight end a little bit of truth serum following his team's Week 1 win over Los Angeles - when he caught two balls for 12 yards and was a footnote in the team's 27-7 domination of the Rams - he probably would tell you he didn't feel fully back just yet. Kittle admitted as much, saying he was still working his way back into game shape.

>Just 10 days later, it's safe to say the real Kittle returned - albeit playing against one of the NFL's worst defenses.

>After a quiet first half, Kittle exploded for four catches, 80 yards and a touchdown in the 49ers' 35-13 win over the Miami Dolphins at Levi's Stadium. Kittle looked fresh, healthy and explosive, especially during San Francisco's first drive out of the half in which he hauled in a 40-yard reception and a 12-yard touchdown. Kittle's third catch of the day gave him his 600th career catch; he joined Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice as the only two 49ers to reach that mark with the franchise.

>Beyond the flashy stat line, though, here's what was most obvious to the naked eye on Sunday: Kittle is back to having fun, and in the ways only George Kittle knows how.

>When the 49ers introduced their who's who of stars 10 minutes before kickoff, most players ran through the smoke-filled tunnel and onto the turf with a joyful exuberance. Trent Williams beat his chest six times and flexed to the crowd. Brock Purdy violently pumped his fist.

He began whipping his head around in every which way as he let out a maniacal laugh. Then, Kittle smacked on his helmet and geared into a full sprint as he pointed his right index finger to the crowd.

>Run game struggles:A week after San Francisco's rushing attack looked as good as it has in years, old issues reappeared. While running back Christian McCaffrey reached the end zone twice - making him the third player in NFL history to earn 50-plus scrimmage touchdowns with two teams - the 49ers' ground game was highly inefficient Sunday. An average of 3.5 yards per carry against a lowly Dolphins defense, which conceded 102 yards to Las Vegas Raiders star Ashton Jeanty in Week 1, isn't going to cut it for a team with Super Bowl aspirations.

>McCaffrey carried the ball 10 times for 23 yards. His backup, rookie third-round pick Kaelon Black, added 25 yards on seven carries. Neither back gained more than six yards on any attempt. This came a week after the duo teamed up for 133 rushing yards on 26 carries against the Rams, who, at least on paper, are viewed as the significantly better run defense.

>San Francisco's rushing attack looked diverse and potent in Week 1. Offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak called the team's two-man running back rotation between McCaffrey and Black "very intentional." But Black's usage seemed limited on Sunday, nor did his lack of efficiency help McCaffrey keep his legs fresh.
