Georgia Tech expected to add DeAndre Hopkins to the offensive staff

ATLANTA — Former Ravens wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins is expected to join Georgia Tech’s offensive staff as the longtime NFL receiver explores the next stage of his football career. Hopkins visited the Yellow Jackets this week and is expected to accept a role with the program, according to Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer. His title and specific responsibilities were not immediately reported.

>The opportunity would reunite Hopkins with Georgia Tech offensive coordinator George Godsey, who has a longstanding relationship with the five-time Pro Bowl selection. Godsey worked with Hopkins as the Houston Texans’ quarterbacks coach in 2014 and offensive coordinator from 2015-16. They crossed paths again with the Baltimore Ravens last season, when Godsey coached tight ends, and Hopkins finished his 13th NFL campaign.

He remains a free agent and has not officially announced his retirement, making his expected move to Georgia Tech a significant indication that coaching could become his next career.

>The 34-year-old recently spent several days with Mike Vrabel and the New England Patriots, working alongside the offensive coaches and personnel department during training camp. The visit was designed to give Hopkins a closer look at coaching and scouting operations rather than an opportunity to join New England’s roster.

>Hopkins would bring instant credibility to Georgia Tech’s receiver room. He has recorded 1,006 receptions for 13,295 yards and 85 touchdowns during a career that included stops with Houston, Arizona, Tennessee, Kansas City and Baltimore. He earned three first-team All-Pro selections and became known for his route running, contested-catch ability and exceptional hands.

>Great players do not automatically become successful coaches, but Hopkins possesses extensive experience reading coverages, creating leverage and winning against elite defensive backs. His knowledge could be especially valuable to young receivers learning the technical details of the position.
