The Kansas City Chiefs could consider adding another wide receiver before the NFL trade deadline as they look to improve their downfield passing attack. A proposed trade for New York Jets wide receiver Adonai Mitchell would give the offense another option capable of stretching defenses and creating opportunities for Patrick Mahomes.
>Kansas City’s offensive limitations have become more apparent following its first loss of the season. The Chiefs were held to just three points against Seattle, with the defense successfully limiting their ability to sustain drives. The performance highlighted concerns about the passing game and its ability to generate explosive plays.
Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid watches his team play the Tennessee Titans during the second quarter at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tenn., Sunday, Dec. 21, 2025.Mitchell has emerged as a potential trade target because of his receiving profile and the possibility that the Jets could consider moving him. A player with his downfield ability could help address the Chiefs’ need for more consistent production beyond short and intermediate routes. The move would also provide Mahomes with another option to target against coverage.
>The Chiefs have typically relied on Mahomes’ ability to extend plays and deliver passes into tight windows. However, the recent loss showed that the offense can struggle when defenses limit its primary options. Adding another receiver could create more favorable matchups and give the quarterback greater flexibility in attacking opposing secondaries.

This is detailed more in an analysis by Zachary Pereles for CBS Sports.
Kansas City’s downfield passing game has gone out the window ever since Tyquan Thornton’s injury. Mahomes didn’t even attempt a pass 20+ yards downfield last week against the Chargers, just the second time that’s happened in his entire career. Thornton still has more than half of Mahomes’ completions 20+ yards downfield this year (4) despite not having played since Week 4. No other Chiefs pass catcher has more than one.
>As fun as it would be to send George Pickens to Kansas City, the Cowboys seem dead set on trying to win this year. Mitchell was actually off to a strong start this season before a finger injury. Omar Cooper Jr. has shined the past two weeks, and when Mitchell returned in Week 7, he only played 44% of the offensive snaps.
A trade would depend on the Jets’ willingness to part with Mitchell and the compensation Kansas City would be prepared to offer. The Chiefs would also need to evaluate his fit within the offense and determine whether he could contribute quickly. Any acquisition would be aimed at improving the team’s chances of sustaining a postseason push.
>The proposed move remains speculative, but the need for offensive improvement is clear. Kansas City has the quarterback talent to remain competitive, yet its latest performance showed that additional help could be valuable. Acquiring a receiver with downfield potential would be one possible way to address the issue before the deadline.
