Mitchell athletes compete in Doug Markworth State Farm tennis tournament

Jun. 1—MITCHELL — Hitchcock Park was filled with tennis action on Saturday, as athletes competed across seven singles divisions and four doubles divisions during the 2026 Doug Markworth State Farm Tennis Tournament.

>In the French Open singles division, Dawson Adams captured the championship after earning an 8-6 semifinal victory over Cooper Star before defeating Matthew Mauszycki 8-4 in the title match. Star rebounded to secure third place with an 8-6 win against Simon Wiese.

>The Miami Open singles division saw Trace Peterson finish atop the standings with a perfect 3-0 record. Peterson sealed first place with an 8-4 victory over Seth Sieber in the final round. Spencer Carlson earned third place after defeating Colter Johnson 8-5.

>Sydney Bohle dominated the U.S. Open singles bracket, posting a 3-0 record on the day. Bohle capped her championship run with an impressive 8-1 victory over Harper Weisenburger in the title match. Sydney Carlson claimed third place after an 8-5 win over Emma Barnett.

>Jacob Delehant was equally impressive in the Wimbledon singles division, finishing undefeated at 3-0. Delehant secured the championship with an 8-4 victory over Liam Schiefen in the finals. Will Mullenmeister took third place by edging Jeremiah Notario 8-6.

>The Cincinnati Open singles championship went to Owen Holstein, who completed a perfect 3-0 day with an 8-6 victory over Ryker Jarding in the title match. Nolan Van Scharrel earned third place after defeating Loukas Michailidis 8-2.

>Sarah Sieber delivered one of the most dominant performances of the tournament in the Australian Open singles division. Sieber finished 4-0 and clinched the championship with a 6-0 victory over Mallory Vickery in the final round. Mary Poeschl placed second with a 3-1 record, while Madison Schiefen finished third at 2-2.

>In the Laver Cup singles division, Carter Schander earned first place with a 3-1 record. Schander highlighted his day with a 6-1 win over Parker Gutzmann in the fifth round. Henry Barnett finished second, while Asher Kaus placed third.

>Doubles competition also produced strong performances. In Wimbledon doubles, Dawson Adams and Simon Wiese teamed up for a 3-0 record and first-place honors, including an 8-3 victory over Dayton Adams and Talon Fenski. Cooper Star and Clay Bathke finished second, while Mauszycki and Sutton Thompson placed third.

>Brooke Steidl and Mallory Buenzow dominated the Australian Open doubles division, going 3-0 and defeating Gabbie Thompson and Zoey Zomer 8-4 in the third round. Emma Barnett and Sydney Carlson finished second, with Thompson and Zomer taking third.

>In the U.S. Open doubles division, Boston Bates and Asher Kaus claimed the championship by defeating Sydney Bohle and Gavin Meyer 8-5 in the title match. Branson Biever and Ryker Jarding secured third place with an 8-1 victory in the consolation match.

>MITCHELL — A handful of Mitchell High School tennis program players powered the Kernels to the team title in the Futures Tournament on May 16 at Hitchcock Park.

>Mitchell had 395.25 points, with Rapid City Stevens in second (389.25), Brandon Valley in third (277.25), Huron in fourth (213) and Aberdeen Central to round out the top-five teams (150.5).

>Members of Mitchell's team include sophomore Jacob Delehant, freshmen Liam Schiefen, Clay Bathke and Charlie Patzer, eighth-grader Patrick Morgan and seventh-grader Will Mullenmeister.

>The tournament serves as a junior varsity state-tournament-like competition, with teams from around the state competing in singles and doubles flights.

>Mitchell had singles titles from Clay Bathke (Flight 2) and Will Mullenmeister (Flight 4), plus a second-place finish from Jacob Delehant (Flight 6). Patrick Morgan (Flight 1), Liam Schiefen (Flight 3) and Charlie Patzer (Flight 5) were all third-place finishers.

>In doubles play, Morgan and Bathke were champions at Flight 1, Mullenmeister and Delehant won at Flight 3 and Schiefen and Patzer were third at Flight 2.
