class="has-text-align-none">Bo Nickal learned a hard lesson in his knockout loss to Reinier de Ridder: this MMA s—t isn’t so easy! Fortunately, the blue chip prospect seemed to take those teachings to heart, rebounding in tremendous style against Rodolfo Vieira with a lovely high kick KO. Nickal remains an incredible talent with unreal potential, and it seems he’s back on the path to making the most of it. Daukaus has made some improvements recently as well. His first UFC run ended in a disastrous pair of knockout losses, but some time back on the regional scene returned Daukaus to the Octagon more dangerous than ever. Since returning on short-notice last year, Daukaus has won two UFC bouts in a combined 93 seconds!

class="has-text-align-none">Let’s take a closer look at the betting odds and strategic keys for each athlete:

Nickal vs. Daukaus Betting OddsBo Nickal victory: -330 • >Bo Nickal via TKO/KO/DQ: TBD • >Bo Nickal via submission: TBD • >Bo Nickal via decision: TBD • >Kyle Daukaus victory: +240 • >Kyle Daukaus via TKO/KO/DQ: TBD • >Kyle Daukaus via submission: TBD • >Kyle Daukaus via decision: TBD • >Odds via FanDuel SportsbookHow Nickal WinsNickal is one of the most decorated collegiate wrestlers to ever step into the Octagon. He compliments that deep wrestling background with some slick submission skills and dangerous range striking, as he’s been training at American Top Team since the inception of his MMA career.

class="has-text-align-none">Thus far, Nickal has been reluctant to use his wrestling against skilled grapplers. That’s why he opted to strike with men like Vieira, Paul Craig, and de Ridder rather than really force his takedowns. There is risk to wrestling offensively beyond getting caught in a guillotine — namely fatigue — but this matchup feels like a good excuse to return to his roots.

class="has-text-align-none">Daukaus has been hurting people on the feet lately. Since Nickal has the ability to choose where this fight takes place, it makes sense to put Daukaus on his back. Avoiding submissions from top position isn’t that complicated, particularly when you have the kind of strength and position understanding that comes with a lifetime of wrestling.

class="has-text-align-none">Ideally, Nickal is patient at range, flicking out jabs and long kicks. Whenever Daukaus tries to press the action, Nickal can duck down and floor his opponent, rinsing and repeating as needed.

How Daukaus WinsDaukaus was always a skilled fighter, but he seemed a little physically underdeveloped in his first UFC stint, really getting bullied in those aforementioned knockout losses. Nowadays, it feels like Daukaus is a little bigger, stronger, and sitting down on his punches, which makes all the difference in allowing his skill to shine.

class="has-text-align-none">To score the upset, Daukaus has to pressure and take chances. He cannot wait on Nickal or be reactive, not when Nickal has the long range and wrestling advantage. If Daukaus waits around, Nickal will find his range, score points, and generally control where the fight takes place.

class="has-text-align-none">Bad news.

class="has-text-align-none">Instead, Daukaus has to take a page from the “RDR” playbook. I don’t mean he has to chase the clinch and pretend to be 6’4”, but he does have to make Nickal uncomfortable by getting in his face. If that results in eating a few counter punches or takedowns, so be it. Daukaus has to keep pushing in the hopes of fatiguing Nickal or landing a fight-changing shot — otherwise, his odds are grim.

Nickal vs. Daukaus PredictionI like Kyle Daukaus, but defeating Nickal is never going to be an easy task. Even if this matchup came before Nickal’s post-RDR development, it would be hard to favor Daukaus. He doesn’t have the same kind of relentless pressure as “The Dutch Knight” nor the absurd physical attributes that make de Ridder such an awkward opponent.

class="has-text-align-none">There’s a chance Daukaus clips his foe with the perfect punch, but he’s not generally a knockout artist. It’s much more likely Nickal outpoints him at range and times a few takedowns for a clear-cut decision win in frustrating fashion.
