>Fans getting used to superstars playing into their late 30s and early 40s is a recent NBA development. Typically, analysts say some players are in the twilight of their careers once they hit about 33. This is not the norm anymore. With his 14th year in the league starting in a few days, Giannis Antetokounmpo was asked about his career longevity expectations. The new Miami Heat star gave a definite answer and even compared himself to Houston Rockets legend Kevin Durant.

Heat's Antetokounmpo clears air on career longevity & compares himself to Rockets' DurantGiannis Antetokounmpo has undergone a lot of changes throughout his years in the NBA. From a scrawny prospect drafted from Greece, he turned into one of the most physical presences on the court. He also became an even bigger defensive threat over time. New changes are set to come his way in the upcoming season too. He will be redefined by Heat Culture as he plays for Coach Erik Spoelstra and alongside Bam Adebayo.

>One would assume that Antetokounmpo is at the age where some semblance of physical decline will seep through. This does not seem to be the case. The Heat star even said he still has many years left. He even cited Kevin Durant as a point of comparison, via Eric Nehm of The Athletic.

>"Thirteen years playing in the NBA, I always play hard. So, it’s almost like two timelines are meeting one another. I’m just being myself. They’re not making me play harder. I’ve always been able to go hard. Now, there’s got to be times when you've got to be more methodical about how hard you go or when you should go hard to be able to pick your spot, which I’m trying to do, but I know I have so much more in my tank. I know I’m 31, but I’m not 35 or 36 and thinking like, 'Oh, I got to start slowing down.' You see (Kevin Durant), like, KD just turned 38. I’m 31. I know I got five, six good years. We’ll see," Antetokounmpo declared.

>So far, there have been no signs of Antetokounmpo slowing down.

GIANNIS SCORING AND ASSISTING AT WILL 💪 The Heat offense is looking scary with Antetokounmpo. https://t.co/nmsDAMaXZ5

— NBA on ESPN (@ESPNNBA) October 4, 2026He made his debut with the Heat during their NBA Preseason opener against the Toronto Raptors. Coach Spoelstra gave him just 14 minutes, and every moment looked like he was the most lethal force on the court. The Greek Freak finished with nine points on 100% from the field and 75% from the free-throw line. His biggest improvement also shone. Antetokounmpo darted seven assists. Despite two turnovers, it looks like the Heat have a new playmaker in their hands.

>There are obviously a lot of expectations for Antetokounmpo and the Heat. One of those is that they are bound to contend for at least the Eastern Conference title. If he plans to emulate Durant for his career, he will have to match the Rockets star's production, too. Once all of those hold, a fourth Larry O'Brien trophy for Heat Culture might just be on its way.
